Chapter 12

RIVER

When I pass IHOP on the drive to work, I briefly consider parking and waiting for McJogs.

Who am I kidding? I’m not in the mood to flirt with any guys today. Mopey sad people don’t flirt well. It’s common knowledge.

If I’m in a better mood tomorrow, maybe I’ll wait for him then. Or at the very least, tell myself I will.

Maybe I need to go back to taking the short way to work and forget all about McJogs. And guys in general. I’m so not ready for men right now.

Relief washes over me when I pull into work and the only car in the roundabout out front is a black Town Car picking up a middle aged couple. I didn’t realize I’d been worried, but I guess I was. It makes sense. The last thing I wanted to see today was—

Those blue eyes…

—that Red Lamborghini.

I drive into the parking garage beneath the hotel and look for a space. That’s when I notice the red Lamborghini parked in the chained-off valet section.

I groan audibly. Please tell me that’s not the same one. This is Beverly Hills, and there’s quite a few Lamborghinis driving around. Best not to think about it.

I take the elevator to the hotel lobby and the first person I see is Finch.

She beams when she sees me and jogs across the marble floor of the lobby, “Guess who’s back!” she squeals.

My stomach lurches. I know where this is going.

She practically gasps, “Remember that hot guy from yesterday?”

“Unfortunately,” I groan.

“He’s staying at the hotel!”

“Yay,” I mutter sarcastically.

Those eyes…

“I helped cart all his bags to his suite this morning. I think he’s going to be staying here for a while!”

I shake my head and acid bubbles in my stomach. Is it reasonable to hope that he won’t want another massage after I threw his money in his face?

Finch scrutinizes me and frowns, “Are you okay?”

“I’m not feeling well.”

She looks at me with concern, “You’re not sick, are you?”

“I am now,” I smile sourly, dreading—

anticipating…

—the possibility of bumping into Suit Jerk during his long stay.

“You don’t look sick. Am I missing something?”

I really don’t want to talk to her about Suit Jerk. To Finch, he walks on water. But he’s only half my problem. I say, “Cage came by my apartment last night.”

“What!” Finch’s eyes pop. “What did he say?” Finch knows the whole story about Cage. She was right by my side through the entire thing.

I grimace, “I think he wants to get back together.”

“Do you?” she asks.

I don’t answer right away.

She squeezes my arm affectionately. Then her face gets serious, “Don’t do it, Riv. If he bailed once for no reason, he’ll bail again. Right when it hurts the most. He was probably chasing after some other woman anyway,” she says sourly.

“How do you always know what I’m thinking?” I scoff.

She smiles and shakes her head, “It’s my only talent. Besides carrying people’s baggage.”

“Which baggage are we talking about?” I half joke. “I could use some help with mine.
